Detailed Itinerary for 7 days Rural Tour Experience Rwanda

Day 1: Arrival at Kigali Airport

Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be welcomed by your guide/driver who will help you with your luggage and give you brief insight into the safari as you drive to the Hotel booked for you for that night. Check into your booked hotel for dinner and overnight. Meal plan: H/B

Day 2: Full-day Kigali City Tour

After your breakfast, you will head out for a brief city tour adventure to various historical sites in Kigali like the landmarks of colonial post-independence, Kigali Genocide memorial site, Kandt Museum and Belgian camp. After lunch, you will wind up your tour with a visit to Bugesera reconciliation village, Nyamata and Ntarama genocide churches and later return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. Meal plan: F/B

Day 3: Rural tour and Community Visit

You will wake up to quite an early breakfast and set out for a visit to the cattle farms to experience the daily farm duties like milking a cow, the system used for cattle grazing in the area and the social life of the typical Rwandese pastoralists which can still be traced in parts of the eastern province in Gatsibo district and Nyagatare district.

This will be a full day of observing and getting involved in the daily duties at these local farms and learning how very different it is from the way it’s perhaps done where you come from. The tour for this day will wind up with a visit to some monuments left behind by the former kings and local chiefs. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. Meal plan: F/B

Day 4: Imigongo Tour

This will be a bit more relaxed in the morning; that is to say, you will not have to wake up quite as early. After your breakfast, you will set out to view the unique paintings called, “Imigongo” which means “back”. These paintings were developed by the Rwandese society a long time ago around 1500 years ago under the influence of Prince Kakira, son of King Kimenyi of the Gisaka kingdom which is part of the great Rwandan kingdom in the current eastern province.

Kakira invented the idea of embellishing and making attractive art designs for decoration purposes using cow dung from calves mixed with ash to make different art designs ranging from the back of an Elephant to elbow designs, among others. They have over ten different designs with well-documented interpretations, and these will be quite interesting to view, learn about and perhaps try developing a few of your own using this local method. You will later return to the lodge after an eventful day. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight. Meal plan: F/B

Day 5: Ethnobotany Tour

After breakfast, you will be heading out to learn about the different herbal medicine used to cure different diseases. Spend the day with traditional healers exploring the different kinds of plants they derive various medicines from, like different seeds, leaves, barks, roots and fruits that can be used to cure quite a number of diseases.

Later in the afternoon, you will visit different local communities to get an experiential food tasting tour and learn how different African dishes are prepared by the women in a typical African home. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight. Meal plan: F/B

Day 6: Banana and Sorghum Beer Production

After your breakfast, you will travel to the beer production plant, and learn how to make local beer using Banana and Sorghum, which is one of the staple foods in Rwanda, used in different ways for example as food, local beer and very important social food used in traditional weddings. Rwanda has four different banana plant species, and each species of banana plant has got unique uses and values which will be made clearer when you get in the field and get a more practical view of each.

The local beer production process can tend to seem a bit complicated but is actually really simple when you get involved and is a pretty fun activity. You will get to interact with the local people too on various aspects of their way of life. Later in the evening, you will return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. Meal plan: F/B

Day 7: Cultural and Departure

After breakfast, you will be visiting the Kinigi Cultural Village where you will get into the depth of the Rwandese culture and their way of life. This will be such an educative and exciting activity to be part of as you try to wrap your head around the different kinds of life that these people lead, so unique from your own. Get to support their local art and craft business through purchasing some of their products. After your adventurous activity, you will transfer to Kigali International Airport for your flight back home. Meal plan: H/B
